Who
Should
I
believe?
So
many people have opinions about truth and the future.
We can wonder “Who should I believe?
Who can be trusted?” Have you considered trusting Jesus? Two
thousand years ago he walked this earth as God-in-the-flesh,
healing people and performing miracles.
He lived the perfect human life of love and taught
God’s perfect Truth, and yet he was put to death as a
criminal.
But
he overpowered death forever when he came back to life three
days later .
Jesus
said “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to
the Father except through me”. (John chapter 14, verse 6)
Why
Should I believe?
One
of the few certainties in life is that we all die.
But have you ever wondered why?
According
to the Bible, the existence of death should tell us that
something is wrong. God
made us to live in loving peace with him and with each other.
But life’s not like that! Instead, our lives are broken
and painful, we have broken our relationship with God.
This is what the Bible calls “sin”. Sin hurts all of
us in two ways; we get hurt and we hurt others.
God takes sin seriously and so he promises to judge evil
in every form. While God’s justice gives us hope that evil
will be eliminated, it should also worry us.
We are not innocent.
As guilty people facing judgement we need to be saved.
For
all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans
chapter 3, verse 23)
For
the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life
in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans chapter 6, verse 23)
What
Should I believe?
When
Jesus came to earth he shared much of our human experience but
in two important ways he was very different.
First, he lived the perfect human life and never turned
away from God. Although
he did not deserve to die, he was executed on a cross where he
experienced the full weight of God’s anger against sin.
In doing so he suffered the penalty we deserve for our
sin. He stepped
into our place because he loves us.
Secondly, death was not the end of Jesus.
Jesus rose from the dead after 3 days and he is the only
person ever to have done that! He shows us that we can escape
eternal death and punishment because the death and resurrection
of Jesus have made it possible for us to enjoy eternal life with
God.
Whoever
believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the
Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. (John
chapter 3, verse 36)
How
Should I believe?
God
has promised that if we ask him to save us, he will.
It seems almost too simple! We are used to paying for
things we want. But
we can’t buy or earn salvation.
We have nothing to offer God, and we are unable to win
God over or make up for our mistakes.
The only thing we can do is to believe God’s promise to
forgive us. He
tells us that the death and resurrection of Jesus has done
everything that needs to be done.
We don’t need to add anything to that. His love is so
powerful and deep that he offers us a gift—a fresh start.
To
receive this gift we simply stop ignoring God and start
believing the promises that he makes to us—promises about
eternal life with him.
For it is by grace you
have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves,
it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.
(Ephesians chapter 2, verse 8-9.)
